For diagnostic purposes please provide the output that you receive for the following commands (to be executed in a terminal window):

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo apt update
sudo dpkg --audit
apt policy grub-efi-amd64-signed grub-efi-arm64-signed base-files

Your problem may be caused by the fact that support for Ubuntu 22.10 has already ended several months ago and you try upgrading only now.

It's what I expected. The repository servers are no more reachable.

You have to follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades and temporarily change the repository server names in /etc/apt/sources.list from us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu to old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
Then try installing all available updates and then re-try the release upgrade.

Please I followed the link you gave me and followed the steps provided accordingly but I get the following error after running the upgrade command "sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo do-release-upgrade"

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If
you want to investigate this yourself the log files in
'/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade.
Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'.

I am sorry, but I have not found the correct solution for your problem. It seems to me that the root cause is related to the version of shim-signed that you have on your system. The fact that shim-signed is an "essential package" requires caution with every step.

What output do you receive for
apt --simulate install shim-signed=1.51+15.4-0ubuntu9

I don't know if this was the eventual solution, but I was having the same issue and after googling a bit I tried the apt remove command from this post: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1406375/error-when-upgrading-to-ubuntu-22-04-lts/1407132#1407132 and that did allow me to start the upgrade via do-release-upgrade.

I can't be sure this would work non-destructively for other people though, so would definitely wait and follow the process Manfred suggests.

@Nathaniel Hartley:
Thank you for the comment, I was not aware of that askubuntu question, but the solution proposed there is quite similar to what I have in mind for the case here.

@Prince Affum Asante:
I suggest that you perform the downgrade of the shim-signed package and then re-try the release upgrade.

Execute the command

sudo apt install shim-signed=1.51+15.4-0ubuntu9

and then run the command

sudo do-release-upgrade

if you get the response that you have to install all updates first, don't do that, but wait for further instructions (deactivate kermic-updates from the sources).

If there are any unexpected messages, please copy/paste them that we can check.

Sorry, my fault. I mixed the release name of Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) with 22.10 (kinetic).

Recommendation:

edit the sources.list file (using admin rights by sudo) and put a comment indicator ('#') to the beginning of the lines that contain "kinetic-updates", that is probably lines 10, 18 and 27

Then run
sudo apt update

and re-try

sudo do-release-upgrade

What results do you receive now?

The update worked but the system got stuck during restarting. I used the advance recovery mode to recover and used the dkpg to fix broken files. After that, i was able to login to my desktop. But now the problem is, the desktop itself and the icons have all become larger like there is no graphics installed on the system. Everything is out of proportion on my desktop. How can i fix that pls.
Below is the latest version of ubuntu now:
lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 23.04
Release: 23.04
Codename: lunar

Before it makes sense to start digging into the details of your problem, you have to make sure that all temporary workarounds for the release upgrade have been reset.

Edit the sources.list configuration file and make sure that:

all occurrences of old-releases.ubuntu.com are replaced by a "normal" mirror (e.g. a country mirror of the region where you are located)
all occurrences of kinetic, kinetic-updates etc. are replaced by lunar, lunar-updates etc., except in the very first line (with the reference to the CD) which has to stay as it is.
the *-updates lines that have been commented out for making the upgrade work must be re-activated (by removing the comment indicator at the start of the line)

When you have done this, execute the commands

cat -n /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt update

and copy/paste all output that we can check.

So should it be something like this: deb http://normal/ubuntu/ kinetic-updates universe

Revision history for this message
Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

There are several pairs of lines in the sources.list file, and each of them should be looking somewhat like

deb http://gh.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lunar universe
# deb-src http://gh.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lunar universe

and similar for "lunar-updates" and "lunar-backports" and "lunar-security"
and similar for "main restricted" and "multiverse"

The only deviation is the first line (which should still refer to kinetic) and the lines with "lunar-security" that should refer to the security.ubuntu.com server

I recommend that you do the following modification to the sources.list configuration file:

Put a comment indicator to the beginning of lines 11, 19 and 29 (those starting with "deb-src")
Remove the last three lines (starting with "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com").

and then re-run
sudo apt update

For the display problem, what is the output of the command

sudo lshw -C display

1. for the sources.list file:

    39 deb http://gh.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lunar-security main restricted
    40 # deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lunar-security main restricted
    41 deb http://gh.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lunar-security universe
    42 # deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lunar-security universe
    43 deb http://gh.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lunar-security multiverse
    44 # deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lunar-security multiverse

in these lines (only in these!) the server should be http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu instead of http://gh.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

2. for the display problem:

What output do you receive for

ubuntu-drivers list

The last two messages from the plenty messages says “started dbus.service - D-Bus system message Bus.”
“Finished gpu-manager.service -Detect the availability gpus and deal with any system changes”

After this messages showing, then the above error shows.
I tried rebooting it again and this time nothing shows. Only a blinking underscore

It seems anytime I update the graphics to nvidia, Ubuntu is unable to load to the desktop. This is because I followed a guide online and was able to remove nvidia. Ubuntu was able to load but still had that same graphics problem I presented earlier. I reinstalled it again and Ubuntu can’t load desktop again. This is really frustrating and I just feel like moving back to windows but I don’t want to loose my files I have on the system and this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. I have all my assignments on it and I’m to present it tomorrow. Please I really need your help guys

There are some reports about problems with NVidia (in some cases NVidia and Wayland do not correctly cooperate), but I am not sure whether this is is the cause of the issue that you see.

I suggest that you try the related workaround and select "Ubuntu on XOrg" at login time (from the cogwheel in the bottom right area of the screen), see https://helpdesk.psionline.com/hc/en-gb/articles/13470827149332-How-to-perform-the-switch-from-the-Wayland-display-server-to-Xorg-X11-on-Linux-Ubuntu-22-04-LTS

I have tried it but didn't work. The same old display is what I am seeing. Everything looks pixelated like there is no display drivers installed.

This question started about the problems when upgrading from Ubuntu 22.10 to 23.10
The release upgrade meanwhile has been done, so it makes sense to close this question.

I recommend that you open a new question for the display problem, following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicsTroubleshootingProcedure
