MSI Bravo laptop keyboard works in grub but otherwise unresponsive

Asked by Lisa C.

Just bought my husband an MSI Bravo 15 Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7-7735HS - Radeon RX6550M (https://us.msi.com/Laptop/Bravo-15-B7EX) whose keyboard gets disabled in almost every current linux distro we've tried. Bios has been updated to the most recent version (E158PAMS.102). Everything works in Windows.

The real kicker is we first did a live usb test drive with Kubuntu 22.04.1 (from kubuntu-22.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso) and the keyboard and everything worked fine! Got it installed, still worked fine! Then it updated and got through grub but then suddenly can't log in or do anything without a usb keyboard. We can use the up and down arrows on the grub screen and can edit grub commands with "e", but nothing at login.

One of the few more recent kernels that has a working laptop keyboard is: "Ubuntu, with Linux 5.15.0-43-generic". A few other previous kernels also work but some kill the networking instead. Other live usb versions, like Kubuntu 22.04.2 (from kubuntu-22.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso), will boot, but the laptop's keyboard doesn't work on them.

We've tried the old suggestions we can find online, like blacklisting different items, but none of them have solved the keyboard issue. Currently using the locked kernel workaround, but that's not a long term solution.

Any help would be appreciated.

Still have this issue, even with updated kernels. Sometimes the network adapter also doesn't work/isn't seen.
