Keyboard and Mouse Not Working in New Lenovo V15 Gen4 Laptop

Asked by Pradip Kumar Das

Hello.

I was trying to install Linux 22.04 TLS from bootable drive on new Lenovo V15 Gen4 laptop with AMD Ryzen 5 (7520U) processor. But to my surprise, Ubunty did no recognize both keyboard and mouse. Only option available was to connect external USB keyboard and mouse to continue installation. Now, even after installation and performing upgrade with sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade, keyboard and mouse still do not work. This issues did not appear in other computers when I had installed same version of Ubuntu earlier. It seems Ubuntu is unable to detect the onboard keyboard and mouse on this hardware for some reason.

Hence, can anyone help on this to get it resolved?

Regards,
Pradip Kumar Das

Does the builtin keyboard work early during the boot process (when you see the manufacturer's logo and a text telling something like "press F10 for BIOS setup")?
Did the internal keyboard already work once on that system?

Thanks for your response.

Yes, the keyboard works fine till GRUB (command line) and the mouse also works in BIOS setup. So, both these are in working condition. But the problem starts when UBUNTU (kernel) starts loading making both these two handicapped.

Is there anything in the system logs (e.g. sudo dmesg) about the keyboard or the mouse?
I have no idea what might cause such behaviour.

I have a similar problem. In my case it is only the keyboard that is not working.

I found that Kubuntu 22.04.1 would recognize my keyboard. You may want to try a Kubuntu/Ubuntu 22.04.1 live distribution to see if it works.

A temporary solution for me has been to select "Advanced options for Ubuntu" in GRUB, then select the "Ubuntu, with Linux 5.15.0-43-generic" kernel. This is the oldest kernel on my laptop, and selecting this kernel will allow the keyboard to work.

It looks like you can download Ubuntu 22.04.1 here: https://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

You can try this and see if it gets the keyboard and mouse working.

Hello Lisa.

Thanks for your suggesstion.

I tried, but even the mentioned older version of Ubuntu i.e. 22.04.1, as you suggested, did not fix the keyboard and mouse (touchpad) problem. Suspend and microphone also fail anyways. For now, I am continuing work by attaching external keyboard and mouse. But these are significant problems from the laptop portability standpoint.

To ensure that it is not a hardware related issue (refer the above thread), I installed Microsoft Windows 11 (Home) in another disk partition, and found that both keyboard and touchpad are working just fine. So, it is pretty much confirmed that is a is a Ubunutu kernel specific issue on LENOVO V15 GEN 4 AMN (AMD Ryzen 5 7520U with Radeon Graphics) laptop. Hence, I would like to draw concerned team's attention to consider this bug and provide a fix at the earliest.

Sure, Vijay.

For the time being I am managing over an external keyboard and mouse. There was a problem on microphone, but it was resolved over stanard Ubuntu updates. But the biggest challenge for non-functional keyboard and touchpad remains the same. Though I learned that the mentioned issues can be fixed by manually upgrading the kernel available from kernel.org, but I have not tried that yet. I shall let you know once I try this. Otherwise, we simply need to wait for official upgrade from Ubuntu towards these fixes. Whenever, I have any updates, I shall post here.

Can you help with this problem?
