Slow-starting Gnome in Jaunty?

Asked by jari

Ever since upgrading from Intrepid to Jaunty the first Gnome session after reboot takes a really long time to start. Like 2-3 minutes. That's still faster than XP was, but 10 times slower than Intrepid. Subsequent log-off - log-on procedures are a lot faster, albeit still slower than Intrepid. Have others experienced similar issues or is it just my configuration? Seems to be just a Gnome issue, gdm loads just the same as in Intrepid and so do other window managers / KDE.

Didn't experience any slowness since I upgraded to Jaunty. Might be your configuration. Maybe you could try the "Computer Janitor" (System -> Administration -> Computer Janitor). You might have a lot of unused packages.
You could also check in Systemp -> Preference -> application at startup. Check if you have things that are started automatically at each startup, that you don't use.

I'm having similar 'problems' but i tend to reboot when i need to go for a cuppa tea or something so don't usually notice and it's not a 'problem' for me. I thought one of the main focusses on the jaunty upgrade was in reducing bootup times.

I assumed it was something to do with having an ati card that isn't one of the ultra-latest 4000 series as there seems to be problems with slightly older cards in Jaunty. Both the proprietary and OpenSource drivers break my system so i just stick with whatever basic thing it is that's in the basic install.

Interesting that other Wm's don't suffer from this 'problem' lol
Thanks, Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

You should make some updates because is 20 times faster than Intrepid in this kind of things.
But you should select some important updates , go to system->administration->software sources; and the the next showed in this image:

& this one too:

After doing that close the window; a message will be shown to you , click on on reload. and after it finishes dowloading necessary files , go and make an update. This will correct many errors in jaunty as this problem .

Well, I created a test user and observed the desktop load quickly with the Ubuntu default settings... so it must indeed be something the matter with mine. On to find the details. Thanks everybody!

Nicely done :))))
I have reinstalled Jaunty and that had little effect so perhaps it's something in the defaults for the first user?
Anyway, good luck and regards from
Tom :)
