Is it possible you got a 64 bit CD and have a 32 bit system?

Please avoid the "install inside Windows" option. A much better way to install is by using these guides

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

At this point it's best to try a demo of Ubuntu by choosing "Try Ubuntu without making changes to the machine". This should get you to a working desktop, we call this a LiveCd session and it should find your internet cable and allow you to surf using Firefox from the toptaskbar. Please let us know if you have troubles getting to a working desktop this way. Often seemingly huge problems are quite trivial, but well worth knowing how to fix before do a proper install. Note a LiveCd session is likely to forget any settings or anything you change while using it, although it can be made to save stuff to the hard-drive once you're used to using it.
