Need help on SSD partitioning

Asked by Luis M.Jacinto

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
One SSD 250 GB
One HDD 1 Tb

PC has no Windows and no games.
I want to install Ubuntu on SSD and use HDD as home.
Ubuntu needs +- 25 GB for is installation does these include applications?
or apps are installed in home?
Installing Ubuntu on 250 GB SSD with 25GB partition can I use the rest of SSD
for data and have the 1 Tb for home only.
Please help the best way for these installation.
Thank you

Is this for a dual boot or is Ubuntu the only OS to go on the system?

250Gb is a lot for apps but I don't know the full picture here. I'd setup the SSD using LVM and you can extend as needed. Starting with:
100Gb for / formatted xfs on the SSD (in LVM) including the /home folder
Whatever size of RAM you have for swap on the platter based disk (non LVM)
40Gb for /var on the platter based disk (non LVM)
The rest of the platter based disk as one big file system for /data formatted xfs

You can then make a symlink in your home folder to /data and access your casual stuff easily. With the SSD being an LVM you can make new logical volumes as you require.

This isn't the 'best' way. There is no single 'best' way. There are simply options. You could even make the root file system slightly smaller and have a separate file system for /home
