How to view readme?

Asked by mikehi

Almost newbie question in Jaunty 9.04.
How do I view the readme? I am trying to figure out why the NVIDIA driver won't load. Error message says to look in common problems in readme.
Thanks,
Mike

That depends on the format that the README comes in. Often they are part of a compressed package so the first step is to "extract" the information (unzip in Windows parlance).

After that you can right click the file and specify which program to use to open it - Text Editor is a good choice.

Thanks Andre. It is my own fault for not communicating clearly because I am
frustrated.

I have installed Jaunty 9.04 on my PC and have a problem with the display
resolution. The error message tells me to look at the readme in the common
problems section. Where do I find this readme?

My question: How do I find the Jaunty 9.04 readme - where is it?

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike, did you download the driver for your graphics card via System, Administration, Hardware Drivers or did you get it directly from the manufacturer?
At a guess, the readme file would be included with the information from the manufacturer.

Hi Andre. I got the nvidia driver using System, Administration, Hardware
Drivers. I am not sure in which directory the installation script would have
put the readme. Also, when it is downloading the driver I get a message
saying that the Jockey backend has crashed, so I don't know if I got
everything or if it installed correctly. Anyway, I really don't know what to
do so I am just trying whatever I can. What would you suggest?
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike, I have looked through my file system to find a readme file for nvidia but to no avail.

If the jockey-backend crashed, just reboot and try the Hardware Drivers again. I have not read of the jockey-backend crashing in Jaunty.

You can also try here: http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

which is an alternative method of installing the nVidia driver.

I run the nVidia driver on my machine (Hardy Heron) without any problems. nVidia also installs a user interface in System, Administration, NVIDIA X Server Settings.

Thank you Andre for guiding me through this. It has been a good learning
experience.
What I figured out was that the 32 bit version of Ubuntu won't install on my
dual core AMD 2.8 GHz machine. Previously I had the 64 bit version of Hardy
Heron on this machine and it worked fine. Like a dummy I decided to do a
complete reinstall of the 32 bit version of Jaunty when it became available.
After all the hours of messing around I decided it wouldn't work.
Reason I wanted the 32 bit version is because there is no flash player
available for the 64 bit version (at least this is true as of 6 weeks ago)
and we like to view youtube videos. Currently we have to use Microsoft for
that purpose.
Anyway, many thanks for your help, Andre. I am now reloading the 64 bit
Hardy Heron and will upgrade it to 64 bit Jaunty after I get it working the
way I want. Hopefully there will be some way I can get a flash player for it
to view youtube videos.

Mike
