You might try Hibernate instead of Suspend.

Closing the lid (screen) or using "suspend" from the drop down menu have freeze the same way.

I do not have any "hibernate" option in any menu.

Use hibernate instead.
Hibernate Moves the contents of memory into swap, tells the bootloader to boot directly into the appropriate kernel, and shuts the machine down, in this state, the system does not require power.

Terminal: sudo pm-hibernate

What bothers me is that the problem appears after an update, so it was introduced by an update.

Will try the suggested command but not practical at all.

Fixed
It seems like u are opening another software that consumes gpu power while trying to suspend the signal can't make it to gpu so the power system will keep freezing trying to read the signal for gpu
Just try to change the gpu firmware version in additional software application or u can find it in software update as a tab
Try to change the gpu firmware version to another version and the issue will disappear

Can you help with this problem?
