is email notification possible for gmail or thunderbird?

Asked by Rychard

Is there a way that I can be instantly notified on Ubuntu when I have new googlemail emails? In Windows there is a googlemail notifier, and Thunderbird also instantly notifies.

Thanks,
Rychard

There certainly is, see gmail-notify
(http://gmail-notify.sourceforge.net/), checkgmail,
(http://checkgmail.sourceforge.net/) or cgmail
(http://cgmail.tuxfamily.org/index.html); all are in the repos.

Thanks a lot, Steven, this is most useful. I have downloaded cgmail: its icon is on my panel, yet it doesn't seem to be responding when I receive googlemail. Do you have any idea why not? Could be something elementary.

Make sure you hit the "Start Service" button in the program, this should make it function. I haven't used that one personally so I cannot comment farther.

Thanks very much again, Steven. I'm still learning the ins and outs of downloading to Ubuntu. I've just downloaded checkgmail and I'm delighted to report that it's up and running, so I owe you a beer, if you're ever in Cambridge, UK.
