No tablet functions with Portege M700 using Jaunty

Asked by oosterhagen

After installing Kubuntu 9.04 Iḿ not able to use the wacom stylus and touch. I can miss the touch functions, but the stylus is undisposable for me.

Editing the Xorg.conf results in not starting due to the different way Jaunty handles hardware. Anyone who has similar problems and soved them?

Hi,

- What's the model # of the wacom tablet you're using?
- Have you used the tablet successfully with any other version of Ubuntu? (or another GNU/Linux distro, for that matter)

Cheers,

It's a TabletPC, which means tt there's a tablet built-in in the screen. Itś a Wacom thing connected through a serial port. It was quite a chore to get it working on 8.10 (see https://wiki.kubuntu.org/LaptopTestingTeam/ToshibaPortegeM700) but with the HAL not picking up the digitizer it's rather impossible to get it working.

Using wacdump I can see that the serial port is being read and that there's data is going to the kernel, but X doesn;t see it ...

Problem solved thanks to Mars Thrax (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/ToshibaPortegeM700)

Anyone having the same problems like I had, be aware that Kate is no good in editing config files. Better stop X and use nano to edit your file xorg.config

Hi oosterhagen

I have followed Mars Thrax's guide but I still can't get the touchscreen to work under 9.04. The screen just shows corruption. I have to ctrl+alt+f1 to get a command line then copy back the xorg.conf to get X working again. I have done the setserial bit and when I try wacdump on ttyS0 it says invalid arguement.

Your the first person that I have read that has it working. Could you detail what you did or I am going to have to go back to Vista to have touchscreen. Now we don't want to do that.

Cheers

Scott

Hi oosterhagen

Cancel last request, got it working. The 'invalid argument' was the clue, I had not typed the serial line in rc.local correctly. *slaps head*

Cheers

Dear Scott,

don't slap too hard. We all make mistakes...

But, hey! Nice you got it working and welcome to the (k)Ubuntu-community!
