Asked by manoj

I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server in my office. We are using Microsoft XP as clients, now i want thue client users to have a login and whenever they try to access a file from server they should be prompted for username & password. If they close the page and if they try to open it, they should be asked forusername & password. How can i configure it in Ubuntu server?

Hi,

What kind of server have you set up on your Ubuntu box? Is it a webserver (probably Apache), a CIFS fileserver (probably Samba), or ??

Cheers,

If you are using samba, you can use

sudo smbpasswd -a <a user name>

they will then need to authenticate as that user, or some more users you add. You can then have /etc/samba/smb.conf specifying what they can access and can not access

for example:

[DOWNLOADS]
path = /home/andy
comment = Some stuff
browsable = yes
read only = no
writable = yes
valid users = andy
invalid users = root bin daemon nobody

only allows the user 'andy' access and denies all the system accounts. This way you can control user access.

Can you help with this problem?
