Did not shut down correctly

Asked by Rich.b

Ubuntu 20.04LTS up to date.
Home build SSD 480GB 2 x 2TB HD's
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS
Release: 20.04
Codename: focal
Linux richard-H81M-S2H 5.4.0-105-generic #119-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 7 18:49:24 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Did not shut down correctly:-
Not always closing down correctly.

Two items have appeared (looking like HD icons) at the bottom of Favourites one said “efi” and the other “Filesystem root”.

Every Monday my system seems to do housekeeping on SSD drive which was not interrupted by me. Then I went on line, all worked ok, when finish I closed down normally.
Next time I went on lie I noticed two 2Tb HD's are not available or visible.
On Monday I did some housekeeping and delete many old out of date backup's both on the PC and an external HD. Them emptied the bin.
Can’t access external HD’s either.

Later rebooted PC noticed that the ssd HD light was on for a longer time than normal, when the light went off I them went back on line.

When closing down the PC did’t close correctly here is image attached. https://photos.app.goo.gl/Sochjd1RnSJ18cu87

I hope this enough information to help you help me.

Thank you.

The text in the picture indicates a problem with a hard disk (I assume sdc).

Which disks do you have in your system? Is /dev/sdc one of the external disks?

I believe that it's /dev/sda SSD see link:-
https://photos.app.goo.gl/RDmssU9yw1QJYhGd6
No external disk connected now.

Looks like a bad drive. You can run an fsck on the disk from a live Ubuntu USB.

Personally I'd replace the drive, reinstall Ubuntu and restore user data from your backups

Thank you Andrew.
I think I will go the your second option, but interested in the first.
Would this be a Ubuntu ISO file of the same Ubuntu OS?

I have forgotten how to done this, can help please?

Yes. You need the file system to be unmounted to check it. This is the same in Windows too.

1. The ISO file need not be exactly the same version as the installed operating system, but it should not be much older.

2. I doubt that the drive with problems is /des/sda, because the last line in your picture tells sdc.

3. Instructions:
Start with https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/install-ubuntu-desktop steps 1 to 4, and create a bootable USB stick (or burn a DVD).
Boot that device and select "Try Ubuntu"
Then open a terminal window and execute fsck on the partitions in question.

Well Manfred you were correct it's the sdc drive that is the problem.
I disconnected both 2TB HD's and the problem had gone.
Then reconnected them one-at-time.

Andrew suggested "You can run an fsck on the disk from a live Ubuntu USB."

Question how do I do that if connecting sdc drive means I can't see any of the 2TB drives?

Thanks again.

You cannot use the graphical file explorer for running a file systemcheck but you better use a terminal window.

The photo in comment #2 shows that there is lvm involved, which makes the case more complicated.

What is the layout of the disks, physical volumes and logical volumes?
What is on /dev/sdc?
Did you activate redundancy (RAID) functions?
Do you have a recent backup?

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

But maybe I misinterpreted your photo and lvm does not involve the two 2TB disks?

As far as I know only the SSD sda is lvm.

Here is link of sdc formatted in July 2020 I do not think that it has been change since.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/EfBBjgUHX5K9YL5FA
Other than I did remove Linux_Backup & Back up Linux on the 2nd of Aug 2022 them empted the Rubbish Bin, that's when the problem started I think.

"What on /dev/sdc" Now, nothing of consequence, as far as I know.

"Did you activate redundancy (RAID) functions?" Don't know I do not think so.

"Do you have a recent backup?" I still have two backups on the other 2TB and the other in cloud.

I did do a CLEAN install in Jan 2021 Ubuntu 20.04LTS
Only on the SSD, As far as know.

I suggest that you:

plug in the disk which we assume is sdc, wait half a minute and then enter the command

dmesg | tail

in a terminal window.
What is the output of that command?

Rich.b (aybi30) said :

Do I enter dmesg | tail with sudo?
The sdc drive has power connected but not Data Lead, is it save to plug this in while the PC on power up?

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

As far as I can remember, dmesg does not need sudo on Ubuntu 20.04 (it does on 22.04). In any case, sudo cannot do harm with dmesg.

If sdc is connected via an USB cable, then this should be hot-plug (but before un-plugging you should logically "eject" the partitions of the drive).

sdc data cable is SATA

Now I am lost. You wrote about external disks, but now it seems to be internal?

Rich.b (aybi30) said :

Sorry to have confused you, I have 2x2TB internal HD's and one external HD which is also 2TB.

The problem drive is the INTERNAL sdc which is SATA data cable.

Can you boot the system when sdc is conected with power and data cables?

Rich.b (aybi30) said :

Yes, but can't see the 2 internal drives if the sdc is connected only “efi” and the other “Filesystem root”.

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

Ok, boot the system with the internal drives connected and then run the command

dmesg | grep sdc

What do you get?

The partition mentioned in the log file is sdc1.

Open a terminal windows and run the command

sudo fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc1

Let's see whether it is possible to rescue the partition and its contents.

I don't think that they are zero length.

This would be Ok.

Of course it is possible to re-format the whole sdc disk, eventually better just the sdc1 partition (that should leave sdc5 and sdc6 intact)

Another attempt, what is the output of the commands

I assume that each of the attempts to access the partition has created a failure entry in the system logs.

The output is more or less what I expected.

It seems that (at least) one block in the partition master data cannot be read any more.
This causes that the system does no more have sufficient information for accessing the partition.

I do not know any possibility to recover the current sdc1 partition. I assume the best step is deleting the broken partition (e.g. by using fdisk, or the disk management program).

I cannot predict whether it will be possible to re-use the space where the error occurred.

From memory I think that there were some Bad Sectors on sdc drive.

Could you suggest disk management program please?

Thank you very much for trying.

What would I type in terminal to run fdisk?

"What would I type in terminal to run fdisk?"

sudo fdisk /dev/sdc

and then execute the appropriate commands as shown in the program.
m ... list all commands
p ... print partition table
d ... delete a partition
q ... quit
w ... write changes to disk
etc., depending on what you want to do and which response you get.

And with "disk management program" I meant the one that you used for the image in comment #2
