BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01) wireless card works, but cannot switch to monitoring mode - want to use aircrack

Asked by thenubsauce

hardware drivers won't show b43

I'm trying to get b43-fwcutter working for my Broadcom bcm4312 wireless card. I've downloaded the b43-fwcutter using the terminal and using synaptic. (I've also reinstalled and upgraded a few times)

I've checked my lib folder. the fireware is there. When I go to System -> Administration -> hardware drivers, only the broadcom STA driver shows up. I don't really care if I can see it. I just want to install the other driver. Any help would be great. thanks in advance.

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Step 4: Please also provide us with the exact model and make of pc that you are using

Keep in mind that one or more of the following 4 basic components need to be configured correctly so that wireless can work correctly in Linux:

Wireless configuration in the BIOS, hardware wireless switch setting, active wireless driver version, and firmware for the wireless chipset (stored as a file in Linux).

Regards,

Mark

I'm using a Dell inspirion 1425 running Ubuntu 9.04 64bit. if I use the the driver ubuntu found, Boardcom STA, the wireless works, but I can't turn my wireless to monitor mode. I've been trying to learn aircrack on and off for a year now, so I hope i can actually get this done.

My laptop has the same chipset. I tried today to replace the wl driver with b43 but seemingly it does not support this chipset, since it does not claim this network controller. This is probably the reason for which it is not listed in Hardware Drivers.
I don't think you can use aircrack with this chip.
Also look here: http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=broadcom

It says:

Most broadcom cards are supported EXCEPT the following:

    * PCI ID 14e4:4315

argh! well that's very annoying. I've been trying so long and I don't even have the right card... *sigh*

Tell me about it... if I had known this laptop had this wifi chipset, I wouldn't have bought it... my wife says I'm nuts :)
