how do I stop chrome extensions from updating

Asked by Bob

I need to stop the Stylish extensions from updating. It is stopping the changes I've made and is blinding me. I've changed everything from black to white and white to black because my eyes are highly sensitive to light and I thought I had it, but it updated again.

There are many videos of how to get them to update, but I can't find one to tell me how to stop them from updating or why they don't update. So there must be a way.

What is also odd is it's only happening on one computer and I can't find out why. It's odd because I cloned the hard drive so they should be the same.

I have
Version 90.0.4430.72 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu, running on Ubuntu 16.04 (32-bit)

I'm not sure what other info you would need on this. So I'll let you ask me. No point in giving useless info. If I have to stop them all, I'm fine with that. Because right now I can't use that computer.

Support for Ubuntu 16.04 has ended a year ago (except for ESM which is a support extension for servers that has to be registered for).

I suggest that you upgrade to a newer, supported release. Newer Ubuntu releases have a dark mode, maybe that helps you. see e.g. https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2020/04/enable-full-dark-mode-in-ubuntu-20-04

And for your question: how did you install that chrome extension? If you did that from the google chrome webstore, then you better ask at a chrome forum, because then this is not Ubuntu-related.

It was downloaded from https://www.crx4chrome.com/history/1184/ I went for an older version. installed it and locked the file thinking it would stop it from updating. But it did not
the webstore is no help. There are a lot of people complaining and no one is answering them.

I'm trying different dark modes but they are not good enough and they do not work everywhere. The theme you picked is not dark enough and will not affect chrome.
I thought you could help because it is the Official Build Built on Ubuntu.
This should be an easy one but I have no clue where to look. I don't understand and can't find why it happened on one computer when they are both the same.

if I can't get this fixed I'm done. I can't look at it for longer than 10 minutes. If it happens on the other computer then I will be completely done with computers. There will be no point in updating if I can't look at them. I even tried putting the window tint
I have over the screen and it not working either. I have the solution but can't use it because It keeps updating. If you can't tell me then where, Can I ask?? It is the official build on Ubuntu How does that not matter?
I need some help.

You have installed that add-on from a foreign source outside Ubuntu. Ubuntu cannot help with it.
You need to look for a support site for chrome or for that specific extension.

"It is the official build on Ubuntu":
The official build of what? There is no official version of that extension in Ubuntu, that add-on is foreign to Ubuntu.
Or are you referring to the browser? Do you have Google Chrome installed or the Chromium web browser?

Even Google Chrome is a foreign package not contained in Ubuntu.

Remark:
If you have installed chromium, then the third item in the first answer of https://stackoverflow.com/questions/27657617/how-to-disable-google-chrome-extension-autoupdate may help.

And finally:
"I have Version 90.0.4430.72 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu"
Due to the fact that you are running an obsolete version of Ubuntu, you do not get any package updates any more.
Chrome (or chromium) version 90.0.4430.72 is not supported any more.
Currently supported versions are 102 and higher.

I had to change to another system to solve my problem. I found an add-on named Dark Reader. It is very similar and has some outstanding settings you can change for all pages or just for one website. A must-have for everyone.

I tried what you sent me and one by one they failed. It was odd, from a few hours then it would update to less than 2 minutes. There has to be a file hiding somewhere that is forcing the update. What is still odd. is the computer I cloned from, is not doing it.
I do have to do a complete update to 64bit . I think I've held out too long. lol

I did do the update to 18 when it came out and it was a train wreck. That is why I went back to 16.04 and stayed there. I do not want to be the test subject for sloppy work that is rushed to make a date and not done with care.

I do have a lot of work to do to update. Even my storage hard drives are at ext2 & ext3. Yeah, go head roll your eyes at me, lol.
Sorry if anything came off as rude or angry it was me panicking. My eyes are very sensitive to light. I only go out at night and even when I'm in a store I have to have sunglasses on.
Thank you for your help.
