ubuntu20.04 wont recognize new password

Have gone to recovery mode, root, typed passwd NEWONE
Still cannot login

This happened after updating Mint 16 to Mint 20.3 along side Ubuntu 20.04.4. After install Mint is first as startup. When start Ubuntu it goes to a login page which I did not have before and would not recognize my password. Thus I went to recovery mode and root and changed to new pw.... won't recognize it either.

Solved the problem. HD storage was full ..... deleted some large folders and reboot. All works as it should.
