Network applet greyed out

Asked by peterzay

On Ubuntu 20.04, the network applet at the upper right randomly becomes greyed out and has a ? inside the icon.

The internet is available.

What is the significance of these changes in the networking app and icon?

Bernard,

All other clients (Ubuntu 22.04, Win11) on the network do not exhibit this feature (bug?). Taking down (reset) the network is very drastic.

Manfred,

The network is wired, not wireless.

---

The problem is random and intermittent. It occurred yesterday for the first time in many months.

This morning, on the users screen, just after boot, the problem occurred again for about 1 second. Then the icon filled out and the ? disappeared.

Sorry for wrongly assuming that it is wireless, but there are much more wireless problems than with wired networking.

I would not care too much about the situation in the first few seconds after booting.

In case that the icon becomes greyed out again, can you run the command
sudo dmesg | tail -n 30
to check whether there are any system messages related to the problem?

After a second boot, the problem appeared and did not disappear. It is constant. The web is available.

Here is the dmesg output:

I do not see anything related to networking, except success messages ("eno1: NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps ...").

Of course you are free to create a bug report. Yet I am not even sure which package you should select as the target. Is it network-manager or just the network applet?
