Problems with desktop and CD rom drive

Asked by Pablo Sanabria

Well, recently I have just updated my Ubuntu from 8.04 version ti 9.04 version (troughing the 8.10 version je je), well there is my trouble:
When I was in the 8.04 version, I used my CD drive and my CD/DVD drive together, I didn't have problems, now when I tried to use my CD Drive in the 9.04 version, my desktop has locked up, mi icons disappered and I couldn't access any folder and any place until I remove my CD from the CD drive and restart session again, but
when i put the same CD to my CD/DVD drive, all normal, Ubuntu can mount my CD, and I don't have any problem
The strange thing is that, only when I use that CD Drive it happens, and everithing can run (the panels, applications, etc) only the desktop and the folder explorer don't work
I only have this problem with the new Ubuntu version(9.04) when I used to use the 8.04 version I didnt have any problem with my CD and CD/DVD drives
PD I can say that the CD drive isn't the trouble, because I tested it booting my computer with the Live CD in that drive, and I didn't have any trouble, and when I booted windows, it also doesn't bring me troubles
well I'm going to write my Computer espesifications:

1. Try to switch off one of CD-drives.

2. Check how the system works now.

3. Try to connect other CD-drive and check system once more.

4. If there was not any hardware errors try to change master\slave drives.

5. If there is any errors try to connect different drives to different harnesses (flat cables).

Hi!

I have the same problem. I have a LG CD-RW drive 52x24x52x and a LG DVD/CD drive. I'm new to Ubuntu and 9.04 is my first installation so it's not a problem with the update but with 9.04 itself. The problem is exactly the same but additionally my cdrom blocks so I can't remove the cd until I restart. Pablo, if you happen to come upon a solution please post it here also.

My specs:
Processor: AMD Athlom XP 2600+ (2083MHz)
RAM memory: 1GB
CD Drive LG CD-RW drive 52x32x52x
DVD/CD drive LG DVD/CD
ubuntu 9.04 and win xp sp2

I think I'm having the same problem with 9.04 (possibly with previous releases, I don't remember). When I start up my computer, it will detect a CD in the drive, but at some point during the session, the CD icon disappears from the desktop (it's no longer mounted?) and I can't eject the CD using the button on the drive until I restart the system.

For what it's worth, it looks like this may be specific to IDE CD drives. I'll keep looking around and if I find anything I'll post it here.

As a suggestion...

please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and try to eject your cd by typing:

eject

into terminal...

Hope this help a bit

Ok, I returned,
the solution is too simple, just update your Ubuntu, the trouble was a bug that Brasero had, but they solved that bug ando now we can enjoy it :D
