firefox and Evolution can't find server

Asked by Ken Johnson

i know nothing about networking and am looking for someone to take me thru the steps of setting firefox up from ground zero.

Right now, firefox will not connect to the internet, and, by the way, Evolution 2.24.30 has the same problem. It has an "error while performing operation" . "Host lookup failed: smtp.comcast.ney: name of service not known."

70170 and 70171 have been rolled into 70180.

Info in 70170 and 70171 are still apropos to the questions posed by 70180, to wit, the computer is hooked up to the internet but Firefox
can not find the address ("Address not found"). Evolution does not send or receive mail: it says "Host lookup failed:smtp.comcast.net:Name or service not known.

The inability of Firefox and Evolution to translate addreses, I believe, is the real crux of the problem and I do not have the knowledge to carry on from here. I need the help of the community to resolve the problems I am having with these two software packages.

I used WUBI to erase and re-load Ubuntu 8.10 and everything works fine now, Firefox finds the servers and Evolution sends and receives my emails.

Thanks all for your help and patience.
