synaptic touch pad driver

Asked by Yasha Karant

Evidently, when I upgraded in place from 20.04LTS to 22.04LTS (both production), the synaptic touch pad driver was not included into the 22.04LTS packages, despite being present in 20.04. Synaptic package manager showed this to be: Synaptics TouchPad driver for X.Org server . I use MATE. The MATE Control Panel (GUI) -> Mouse showed mouse only before I (re)installed using the synaptic package manager the Synaptics TouchPad driver, after which both there are two tabs (as before in 20.04LTS after installing the Synaptics TouchPad driver into 20.04LTS), Mouse as well as Touchpad . The upgrade in place configuration persons perhaps should fix this so that available packages / functionality (in the event of package "renaming" or "consolidation") installed in LTS will be installed in the major version upgrade to the next LTS major production release. With the synaptic touchpad driver, I can make adjustments to the touchpad "actions/sensitivity" as needed.

On a new install of 22.04 the package:
xserver-xorg-input-libinput 1.2.1-1
Is installed by default which provides the
driver for input devices keyboard, mouse, and touchpads
Essentially replaces other previous synaptic drivers.
which is a new for Jammy.
This is found in the Synaptic Package manager.
Comes preinstalled.

Bernard, Thank you for that clarification. Then either MATE has a
defective feature in that it does NOT "turn on" the touchpad adjustments
(just the mouse) with the package you mention below but requires the
package I did install (at which point the touchpad adjustment did
"activate" and allow me to adjust the touchpad sensitivity and
"turn-off" the touchpad when typing by using the GUI sliders, etc.,
rather than CLI input), OR the replacement package does not have this
feature. I have not tried other GUI systems than MATE and thus I do not
know what would happen in other GUI systems. My suspicion (without
examining the source code and "building" instructions as this is too
time consuming with my present time demands) is that the "new" version
you mention below lacks some "hooks" or "features" present in the
previous version that I manually loaded. Thanks again.
