22.04 802.11 (wifi) firmware failure

Asked by Yasha Karant

I just updated in place (no new harddrive, no new partitions) from 20.04LTS to 22.04LTS. Everything worked except that there is a firmware loading diagnostic (along with a separate failure to compile the VMWare kernel support -- but that may be a VMWare issue, not Ubuntu). Thus, the 802.11 hardware is NOT "seen" by the kernel, etc. (I am using bluetooth to Android phone to our 802.11 network to get to the Internet right now -- not the laptop 802.11). The relevant section of the dmesg log seems to be: [ 30.805966] kernel: iwlwifi 0000:3d:00.0: Failed to load firmware chunk!
[ 30.814167] kernel: iwlwifi 0000:3d:00.0: iwlwifi transaction failed, dumping registers

and more. The machine is a HP Zbook G2 that had no issues with Ubuntu 20.04LTS. Any help would be appreciated. Would it work to downgrade the firmware .deb to 20.04LTS or would this be not compatible with the current 22.04LTS production kernel or environment. If downgrading would work, please provide "detailed" instructions (e.g., the apt command invocations to use).

I suggest that you follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure for diagnostic purposes.

Manfred, Thank you for the above URL. I have just done what you suggest -- all 6 steps -- and posted as specified.

Wireless troubleshooting output is in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/701660

It does not make much sense to have a bug and two questions in parallel.
I suggest that you continue in the bug report, and as first step issue the "apport-collect 1971065" command as requested there.

I posted the question first. I also posted to the Ask Ubuntu. A
correspondent on Ask Ubuntu ultimately provided the information that I
should have posted the bug report. How do I remove/link the question to
the bug report? Thank you.

The links from the questions to the bug report and vice versa are already there, see the block "Question information" of https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/701570

Next step should be executing the actions as written in comment #3 in Bug #1971065

Can you help with this problem?
