Not enough file space to backup

Asked by Robert James

My computer threw a wobbly this morning, which reminded me I haven't backed up in years. I tried running Timeshift, but it tells me I don't have enough space to back up (my hard drive is only 250GB). I was hoping to back up onto my external hard drive (1TB), which has plenty of space - but Timeshift says it doesn't have a linux partition so it won't do it. Can I back up onto the external hard drive? Do I need to create a partition?
