Upgraded to 9.04, my ATi graphics card?

Asked by george_rutkay

So I finally upgraded my machine, it's a Dell Precision 370 with some ATi graphics card (128 meg of video ram).

Under 8.10 Compiz ran ok, my wife liked the eye-candy, the cube desktop, the flames, etc...

Under 8.10 the system recognized that the graphics card needed a "Restricted driver" and recognized it as such.

Now I upgraded to 9.04.

Why doesn't 9.04 recognize the graphics card's requirements and look for a "Restricted driver"? The desktop effects aren't happening as they did under 8.10, in fact they're very crippled.

What's happening please?

Thanks.

How do I get a driver running under 9.04 for this card? It worked under 8.10, there's no reason why this should be different under 9.04?

Try this:
Download the beta 8.601 drivers from here:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/fire/Legacy/Pages/fire_linux.aspx?type=2.4.3&product=2.4.3.3.2.3.1&lang=English

unzip the dir
run from the command line in the unzipped dir
./ati-driver-installer-8.601-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/jaunty

Then do:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now my networking under 9.04 has ceased to connect to the internet!! What manner of madness IS this upgrade?

I won't be able to impliment your solution, sorry, this 9.04 is behaving in a most unstable and unpredictable manner, it's really quite shameful!
