can't figure out how to get wifi driver going ubuntu 9.04

Asked by jscanlan79

I am completely green to Ubuntu. If you know the answer to my question please provide baby steps for me to troubleshoot. Thanks.

I have an HP Pavilion which I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 as the sole OS. I previously had Win XP service pack 2.
Prior to installing Ubuntu my new wifi card worked fine.
I am able to connect on wire fine. It appears that there is no network driver installed for my wifi card.

The website for my wifi card is this: http://www.intellinet-network.com/en-US/products/3563-wireless-g-pc-card
there I can see that there is a linux driver available for download.

I clicked to download the driver and this put a folder on my desktop filled with all sorts of stuff I don't understand. When I downloaded the driver for windows xp there was an icon that I could click on and it automatically installed the driver for me. I have clicked on several of the icons within the folder that downloaded when I clicked on the driver for linux, but all I seem to be getting are readme documents, icon picture files, and text like documents with a bunch of commands which I don't know what to do with.

The readme file indicates that the driver is supported in:
1. redhat
2. mandrake
3. SuSE
4. Fedora
5. Slackware

I think these are all linux-based operating systems
does this mean that the driver is not supported in Ubuntu? If so, can anyone suggest a wifi card that IS supported?
Otherwise, is there a workaround to resolve this?

correction - the laptop has Ubuntu 8.10 installed (I confused it with my desktop which I had 9.04 installed) - the question is regarding Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit

try lspci and see if your wifi card is being recognized. the dirvers you downloaded can be used. try searching installling tar.gz in ubuntu. you have to convert them into debian (.deb). also try to see in system>administration>hardware drivers if there are any drivers available for your hardware. hope this helps.

Thank you for your assistance. I was able to confim that the driver is working through the command you provided. I didn't realize that I had to left click on the wireless icon to see the available networks - I just hit that by accident. Again, thank you for your help!!
