The disk drive partition will not open.

Asked by Ridge Liu

I recently updated my computer version of ubuntu to 9.04 and then restarted the computer. My computer can dual boot between Vista and ubuntu. But when it tried to load, an error message popped up. It said something along the lines of "Did you load the right disk?, Did you wait long enough?" or something like that. Then it says "Enter 'help' to see a list of possible options." However, at that point, neither the keyboard or the mouse works. After that message pops up, I manually (press the power button) shut the computer down. That was yesterday. Today, the same thing happens every time I try to operate ubuntu. Someone please help! I have several files that are not backed up, and I don't want to un- then reinstall ubuntu. Someone please help.

You should have a backup if your data is important.

Boot to livecd and fsck your partitions to make sure they are ok.

In the worst case scenario, you could use a live cd, mount your Windows and Ubuntu partitions and back up any vital data to an external drive or USB stick.
Not much help with regard to fixing the problem, but at least you could save your data before any further attempts to sort the issue.

Will this work if the livecd is 8.10?
