Just to clarify - "we" didn't create "it" - the folks on here are just other Ubuntu users who try to help out sorting issues for other users. I appreciate that it is frustrating when an update causes issues, but it is likely to be an easy enough fix.

I presume this is the Toshiba nb100?
Are you using the Ubuntu Netbook Remix or a standard Ubuntu install?

Have you tried the suggestion in this bug report -

https://bugs.launchpad.net/netbook-remix/+bug/298607/comments/3

Hopefully that should sort your problem, but if not, please report back with a little more detail - e.g what chip does the soundcard use (lspci should give you the details)

some times the sound master control randomly gets set to control line in (any way thats what happen to me)
all you have to do is change the mixer device to the correct one
=================howto===================
goto system => preferences =>sound
or right click the volume icon & click preferences
