laptop does not respond to keyboard or mouse

Dell Vostro 15 7510
:lsb_release -crid
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 21.10
Release: 21.10
Codename: impish

Sporadically the laptop does not respond to keyboard or mouse input. The cursor still shows up. This may be associated with waking up from suspend. I can still get to a terminal with Ctl-Fn-Alt-F1.
I see this in kern.log at about the time of the issue:

THX, I turned off 'Power On Lid Open'. We'll see...

Still there. It happens when I close the lid and re-open it. Sometimes close and open again fixes it, sometimes not.
I've pinned it down to xfce4-screensaver. If it turn off 'Enable Lock Screen' the problem goes away. If I enable it comes back

In addition you could try the solution proposed in the second askubuntu link:
Add button.lid_init_state=ignore to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub and then run sudo update-grub.

OK, I did that (grub cmdline*). It seemed to work with various tests, until...
I closed the lid, left if alone for long enough to suspend (16 minutes), then open lid and screen stayed blank, keyboard, mouse, or power button would not wake up the screen. Close and open lid again and the display is on, but there is no login window, and it won't respond to keyboard or mouse. I have an ssh connection open between desktop and laptop and it is alive.

If none of the proposed solutions work, then I am at my wits' end.

Hopefully the bug report will provide an answer.

A little more info, with the GRUB_CMDLINE change, and closing the lid, the display doesn't wake up with the screensaver lock screen enabled or disabled.

I've noticed another oddity. xfce4-screensaver & xfce4-screensaver-Lock Screen are still disable.
Close Lid,
Open Lid after laptop has gone to sleep
Screen is still blank, keyboard, trackpad, and mouse would not 'wake' itup.
Close lid and open it again, laptop wakes up.

Here's what I gathered up from the 1st lid open, until they system was usable
