Gnome Tweaks won't maximize

Asked by Maruan Kaled Charkieh

I want to start off by apologizing if this is the wrong place to post this, I'm just getting started with Ubuntu 20.04 after a decade of using only Windows so I'm not sure where to ask for help with the issues I'm having.

I feel this is the one that's been bothering the most, because I can't find a solution and it doesn't seem to be a common problem, so I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help me.

It's nothing that breaks the system or anything, it's just this one specific window, the Gnome Tweaks window, it refuses to maximize, I've tried double clicking on the title bar, I've tried enabling the animations, I've tried changing all Gnome Tweaks settings to their defaults and restarted the laptop, but nothing works, every time I click the button to maximize it acts as if it did, with the look of the button changing to imply it's maximized, and the windows changes its place slightly, it's as if it's trying to maximize, but can't.

When I started up Ubuntu for the 1st time and installed Gnome Tweaks I didn't have this problem, but as I installed a few tweaks it got like this, even after disabling everything, I feel it could've been the Dash to Dock extension because I had a lot of errors with that, to the point where I downright removed it completely, but I'm not sure if that's what caused it.

The app Gnome Tweaks has its own default size as full screen, which is not the entire screen.
You can right click on the title bar and select resize.
However when you open it the next time it will be at the apps default size again.
None of the App settings change the default size of Gnome Tweaks.

What errors did you have ?

Hello, thank you for the answer.

I don't know if it's the solution I'm looking for though, what I mean is regarding maximizing the window, the button between the one that minimizes it and the one that closes it, with the icon that's just a plain square, it works in every application and I'm sure it worked in Gnome Tweaks when I started using it, however the error I'm having is that now when I click it instead of maximizing the window as it should, it does an animation for a brief second, like it's trying to maximize it, but can't, so it goes back to normal, with one key difference, the square icon, which is used to maximize, becomes the icon with the duo of squares, one over the other in an angle, the button used in maximized windows to minimize them, which means that the system recognizes the window as maximized, even though it's not.

I really don't know what I did wrong or what I should do.

I appreciate the advice and the help given so far! Resizing the window does work and allows me to have the window fill up the whole screen, which is already helpful, but it's still not an ideal solution I think, because it doesn't really fix the bug, it's more of a work around, I still have a maximize button that doesn't work and every time I want to switch between a maximized window and a smaller window I have to manually resize it instead of pressing just one button, I hope I'm not sounding ungrateful, and I appreciate the help so far a lot, but having a bug like this feels jarring and I'd love to be able to fix it and make the button work properly again, but I'm not good at coding and debugging, so I don't know how to do it.

File a bug report.
Use Apport to file the bug report, otherwise is will be considered incomplete.
Open a terminal [ctl+ant+t] Type: ubuntu-bug gnome-tweaks
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport
Please include the link of what is going on with the app on bug report

Can you help with this problem?
