Resource URL at DialupModemHowto/ScanModem is not available

The page in question is https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto/ScanModem. It reads:

"To find out what kind of software modem you are using, go to linmodems.org, read the page, and download the scanModem tool [...]:"

The linked URL for the word 'scanModem tool' is http://132.68.73.235/linmodems/index.html#scanModem.

However from yesterday to the point of writing, I have experienced trouble accessing it. The HTTP error code is 'ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE'. For the last time I checked Google chrome reported a stalled time of 21.49 seconds, and aborted it. Hence issue the above error.

In a vague attempt of somehow getting hold of the resource, at least a zip file, I am using this web page: https://docstore.mik.ua/manuals/ubuntu/8.10/internet/C/index.html. I will update my progress. But this won't be the solution.

what you’re trying to achieve: access the resource linked and instructed to follow at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto/ScanModem.
what steps you take: go to the URL: http://132.68.73.235/linmodems/index.html#scanModem.
what happens: Browser reports 21.49s of stalked time, then issues 'ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE'.
what I think should happen: The URL instructed to follow should be accesible

OK, on this https://docstore.mik.ua/manuals/ubuntu/8.10/internet/C/index.html, it has a URL: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz. A whois lookup for that site indicates that it is a institute in Israel. However that site is also not available, It is stalked for seconds, and issues 'ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE'.

The last Wayback Machine copy is dated AUGUST 1, 2019 (https://web.archive.org/web/20190701000000*/http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz).

After running the software, Its output was that the software was 17 weeks(or days? I can't remember) old, the software said that it will continue in 10 seconds anyway, I stopped it. So the latest copy should be 28 Novenmer 2019 (https://www.timeanddate.com/date/dateadded.html?d1=1&m1=08&y1=2019&type=add&ay=&am=&aw=17&ad=&rec=). But that makes no sense.

Ok, I made it run after the ten seconds, it generated some files. The CLI output said to read a specific file. Then, was told to send a specific file attached to a email to <email address hidden> - the result? Email was not delivered.

As far as I can see, the links are dead and the help.ubuntu.com page (last modified in the year 2008!) needs to be updated or removed.

What exactly do you want to achieve with that scanModem script?

@m-hampl, I need to run it, as the site says.

"I need to run it, as the site says."

Sorry to repeat myself:
What do you want to achieve by following the outdated instructions?
Do you really have a dialup modem and do not know about its capabilities?

"What do you want to achieve by following the outdated instructions?"

You are making a assumption, who said those were outdated (and who declared?)?
Last edited on 2008 don't make it outdated, as there is no replacement. As such you question should be "What are you expecting a Ubuntu user to follow by showing these outdated instructions?"and you should ask it from the support team, not me.

" Do you really have a dialup modem and do not know about its capabilities?"

What are you asking? to what extent about my modem? I know all the visual cues that the human eye can get by looking at the modem, nothing more. I can't crack-open the chip or do some cyborg-type analyzing. Also, I am not looking for "capabilities". I am trying to generate the file that this support page asks.

An instruction page whose links lead nowhere definitely is outdated.

Let me try rephrasing my question:
What problem do you have that you think that the ScanModem page helps solving it?

What is on the support page, if you are **lazy** this:

help you set up the driver, and configure your dial-up connection over a modem

I am sorry, but it seems that we are unable to communicate with each other.
Maybe somebody else can help. I give up.

Of course, you should ask the support team this question "What are you expecting a Ubuntu user to follow by showing these outdated instructions?". Because you had that problem since the beginning.

I tried to answer but you keep asking, and I am the user not the one who maintains Ubuntu.

Nor am I the one who maintains Ubuntu. I am just an ordinary Ubuntu user myself, not more.

My intention was finding out what you want to achieve, to look for an approach that is different from using that outdated ScanModem instructions, but you decided not to answer my inquiries.

"Nor am I the one who maintains Ubuntu. I am just an ordinary Ubuntu user myself, not more."

Another assumption. You think I said that to imply specifically that you are a Ubuntu maintainer? I said that to say I am not a Ubuntu maintainer; I can't answer *X* question. I did not indicate you are a Ubuntu maintainer.

"My intention was finding out what you want to achieve, to look for an approach that is different from using that outdated ScanModem instructions, but you decided not to answer my inquiries."

Well I answered your inquiry by the comment #7, want more clarification? reply to me.

For me that is a hopeless case. No more answers from my side.

What is the answer: no answer.
Well, then why are you closing it: switched to fedora.
