Intermittent artifacts, missing characters, window darkening

Asked by John Fenley

I have an older ASUS laptop that is experiencing many graphical issues. During install, some characters didn't show correctly in the installation program... They were just simply not there. I restarted the install and the problem went away. This happened again, but only for characters in the firefox live search results window. Restarted firefox, and the problem resolved itself.

Today, all my windows suddenly went dark, but the desktop, sidebar, and top bar are all normal brightness. Also, the top corners of the active window is not darkened in a small square the exact size of the rounded corner. There is some flickering back to regular brightness that seems to have something to do with the position of the mouse cursor. If I mouse over different parts of the screen such as icons in the side bar the flickering changes. The undarkened regions seem to be related to tooltips that might be generated by the mouse placement. Sometimes the flickering slowly cycles through 2 or 3 different patterns as long as it is left in one spot. Moving the mouse at all, changes the pattern, but the flickering would start cycling again when I stopped touching the mouse.

There seems to be some problem with the z index of the windows, and shadows. This feels like a symptom of some problem reading and writing video memory. I haven't had any problems with this laptop before installing 20.04.

below is the complete output from the graphics troubleshooting info gathering command at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicsTroubleshootingProcedure

I suggest you test your RAM using Memtest86 as a good first start.
If you go into the BIOS is it the same?
Also make sure you have the latest BIOS. This may help.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask John Fenley for more information if necessary.
