vostro 15 7510 suspend & power management

Asked by brad haack

New vostro 15 7510 laptop

Xubuntu 21.10
5.13.0-22-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Fri Nov 5 13:21:36 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Sporadically consumes the battery when it should be in standby.

Sometimes seems to shut down or won't boot up after a suspend when the battery is fine.

What should I be looking for? Looking for any help I can get. I don't see anything obvious in kern.log or syslog

Note: When I posted this, the OS and kernel were:
xubuntu 21.04
5.11.0-41-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Fri Nov 5 11:37:01 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Same issue then, as noted below I updated, but it did not solve the issue.

I updated the bios to 1.3.0
I updated the OS to 21.10
5.13.0-22-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Fri Nov 5 13:21:36 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I've observed 3 failed suspends today & a couple of successful suspends. For the Failed suspends, it won't wake up with any mouse or keyboard event, or a power key tap. It will reboot with a lid close & open, or long press on the power key.
2 of the failed suspends are missing this in the syslog:
Dec 6 09:48:35 brad-dell kernel: [ 701.709814] Filesystems sync: 0.003 seconds
Dec 6 09:48:35 brad-dell wpa_supplicant[732]: nl80211: deinit ifname=wlp0s20f3 disabled_11b_rates=0

One of the failed suspends is also missing these commands:
systemd-sleep[3900]: Suspending system...
kernel: [ 781.663038] PM: suspend entry (deep)

Right after "systemd[1]: Finished GRUB failed boot detection.", where there is usually the systemd-sleep suspend & the kernel suspend cmds, There are a bunch of non ascii characters

Original question text: "xubuntu 21.04"

Comment #3: "I updated the OS to 20.10"

This does not fit together. Which operating system are you running?
What is the output of the command

lsb_release -crid

ok, it is 21.10 and not 20.10 as erroneously written in comment #3

In some cases similar to yours resetting the BIOS to sane default values has helped.

Sorry for the confusion. I fixed comment #3.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'resetting the BIOS to sane values'. I haven't changed any settings in the BIOS. I did change the sleep mode from s2idle to deep based on thread on the Dell forum. I change that back & see if that helps.

"I'm not sure what you mean by 'resetting the BIOS to sane values'."

I was referring to the following:
When you boot the computer and press the appropriate key to enter BIOS setup, on one of the BIOS configuration screens there usually is some function like "reset BIOS to default values".
You might consider using that, but do not forget to write down the values that you may have changed (e.g. UEFI, boot sequence, caps lock, ...), that you can re-apply them.

Updating the OS to 21.10, update the bios (1.3.0) to the latest, and setting the sleep mode to s2idle has hopefully fixed my suspend issues.
Summary:
New lapttop, intalled Xubuntu LTS 20.04
I had issues with battery consumption.
Updated the Bios to 1.2.1 (the latest at the time)
Updated the OS to Xubuntu 21.04
Changed the sleep mode to deep (was s2idle)
Installed tlp
Updated the OS to Xubuntu 21.10 & the Bios to 1.3.0
I did all of the above changes incrementally and still had issues.
Change sleep mode back to s2idle

After a couple of days testing I haven't had any reboots when waking, or excessive batt consumption when suspended.
Hopefully problem solved.
