vlc pause click plugin help

I have vlc 2.2.2 all I want is to install the pause click plugin. But after two hours, I'm nowhere. The instructions are vague and I hit the wall on them all.
I'm still in 32 bit if that matters. running Linux ubuntu 16.04

I've even tried the command lines and get to
No rule to make target 'install

So copying and pasting from the list I found is not working either.
This should be easy but it's not for me.
Can anyone help?

Ubuntu 16.04 is not supported any more (except for ESM - Extended Security Maintenance).
You should upgrade to a supported Ubuntu release in due course.

Have you tried https://github.com/nurupo/vlc-pause-click-plugin#debian ?

I get to

sudo make install

and get this

make: *** No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.

I assume that you are located in a wrong directory.
Please show all steps that you do - from the beginning.
