Ubuntu 18.04 - after some software repairs the Wi-Fi does not work

Asked by michael doran

Ubuntu 18.04 - just got some patching done on the software here and now the Wi-Fi is not working. Just finished doing an fsck command on the system since it wasn't booting up, repaired some broken and orphaned inodes and a few other things. Now that the system 18.04 is working enough for me to be doing this, I have to use a hard-wire instead of Wi-Fi since the Wi-Fi does not work. It worked before - it is built into the laptop but the system doesn't seem to see it.
What must I do?

opened terminal console, clicked on "Edit" and the word "profile" is not there. Instead I can choose "select all" or "preferences".
So I opened "preferences" and found "scrolling" as a tab choice and I opened that tab
There is no "unlimited scrolling" available as a choice.
However, there is a "limit scrollback to:" choice which offers 10000 lines + or - as a start.
OR
I can disable this limit by unchecking the box at the beginning of this choice.
But is this what I should do?
This is denoted as an unnamed profile and I could add and name a new profile which would start with default settings.
Again I am uncertain as my set-up doesn't match the troubleshooting guide's description....

To be honest, I haven't checked the details of the troubleshooting guide in the recent past, and it may well be the case, that some details do no more totally fit to updated programs.

In your case I recommend removing the tick mark besides "limit scrollback ..." in the unnamed profile, and this should stick for all new terminal windows (unless overwritten by a different setting later).

The background for that setting is that the output to be checked may be quite long, and if the limit is set to a too small number, then the first part of the output may be cut off. 10,000 lines should be enough anyhow.

OK here goes - I did respond "yes" to continue at some point - maybe this fixed it? We'll see- anyway here is the readout:

I used the "lspci -nn" command to discover the Vendor and Device ID for your wireless adapter and here's the readout for that:

I am running all this from the hard disk- not the liveCd.
And the laptop is a HP EliteBook 8540p.

And finally I'm not sure what this question is asking for:
"Please also specify the name of the wireless access point that you are trying to connect to (not the model/make of your router)."

I cannot see any WLAN device in your output.
Should it be a built-in one, or one that is connected via USB?

It should be built in - unless it burned out or something

Is there somewhere a hardware switch to enable/disable the WLAN device?
Or is there anything in the BIOS setup dialog that may disable the device?

HAH!! Yes! Of Course! The Bios was the answer! Somehow it got turned off
(?) but now it is turned back on and I am using iot right now to answer
this.
Manfred - Thank You So Much!
You are living up to the true meaning of Ubuntu.
Sincerely,
Mike
