SGX is Disabled in BIOS

Asked by Nick Fullington

Hello,

When I install Ubuntu 21.10 Desktop, everything works fine.
Once I reboot the system, it goes into 'emergency mode' with the error "SGX disabled by BIOS".
My motherboard 'Asus Prime Z370-A II' is capable of using SGX, but only gave me the options 'disable' and 'software controlled' in the BIOS with no 'enable' option.

I have tried multiple troubleshooting steps online with no help.
I may try reinstalling Ubuntu 21.10 to see if it was an installation issue.

Is there any way to either get that 'enable' option in BIOS or bypass that error?
I have reinstalled Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS for the time being but would like to eventually use Ubuntu 21.10.

Thank you!

I believe that you are misinterpreting the situation.

"SGX disabled by BIOS" is a warning message that should not do any harm. Booting should continue after showing the message.

Apparently there is something different that prevents booting the newly-installed system.

How does this "emergency mode" look like?
Can you select "advanced mode - root command prompt" from the grub menu? (Hit the left shift key early during boot to call the grub menu.)

Hello,

Thank you for the information.

I had 20.14 installed so the issue was no longer present.

I reinstalled Ubuntu 21.10 (for the 3rd time) and it appears to be working so far!
The 3rd time is after I had 20.14 installed.

There have been no issues so far and all updates were performed.

I am hoping it was a one-time issue.

I will mark this as solved and if the issue is persistent, I will start a new question.

Thank you!
