using chrome video goes uncontrolled in 18 and 20

Asked by skip cook

Using chrome in either 18.04 or 20..04 the display appears to be controlled by some process I have been unable to identify. It only happens on the DELL XPS410.It happens whether system is on HD or thumb drive. In addition the initial screen has multiple lines running horizontally through the display, with the wrong colors (colors are correct without the horizontal lines on shutdown).
Both 18.04 and 20.04 run fine (no problems) on 2 other machines, Dell Optiplex 755s. In addition, this XPS machine runs windows without a problem although Windows is seldom run.
One other thing, even from fresh startup some things will not run, like firefox and settings, they apparently start, because the need to be killed on shutdown.
Problem started after an update to 18.04.

Is this on YouTube? If so, have you tried other streaming sites?

It is not on utube, and is not related to streaming sites.

I do not use social media, and implementation of VLC does not solve the problem. I also found that LinuxMint has a similar problem, just not as severe. It does appear that everything works OK in text mode, but once a video of some sort is initiated, the screen representation is overlaid with various shapes and becomes unreadable.I now have a solution that I will use at least for now, don't use chrome on this machine, use one of the others.

Mint is based on Ubuntu so testing in Mint isn't really effective.
