Switch HDMI Input on Dell AIO

Asked by Jungle Boy

I am running Ubuntu 21.10 on Dell Inspiron 7700 all in one desktop, multi booting with Windows. The desktop ships with an HDMI input port, to which one can can attach any other device with HDMI cable and use the desktop as a monitor. The desktop has a dedicated button to switch between the desktop and HDMI in port. On Windows, a application provided by Dell (DELL OSD) needs to be installed before the button can be used. With the DELL OSD software installed, the switching works fine and I am able to use the desktop as a second screen with my laptop attached. How can I similarly switch between desktop and HDMI in port on Ubuntu. Contacting Dell support isn't a bad idea. It may be a Windows only thing but they may be able to advise

I contacted Dell support but the standard support is only provided with pre-installed OS. As such, my question here as Canonical seem to have partnership with Dell for shipping Ubuntu based laptops.

Can you use the OSD as part of the monitor? Does the display have such a menu like a traditional monitor at all?

Seems there is a tiny button

I don't own the device myself so you may have to look around for this

The OSD here refers to the software which I think is triggered by the hardware button and makes the actual switch. Without the Dell OSD software, the hardware button is of no use, even on Windows.

Yes, button 2 is used for switching between inputs.

Does it not work outside of Windows? Can it be used without Windows running here?

That is my query. I pulled the plug when it was switched to monitor mode i.e. hdmi-in. It reset to desktop mode when powered on, which suggests the switch is software based. Controlling it through a software on Windows suggests it may be something exported by the bios.

Have you checked whether the BIOS setup has any settings that might influence this feature?

Remark: It seems that there is a BIOS update available, marked urgent, for addressing a CVE vulnerability.

Installed the latest bios. The only related setting option available in the bios is to disable OSD completely i.e. not make the switch between desktop and monitor mode even if the button is pressed.
