You mention you have dual-boot environment, boot to the non-ubuntu os and format the ubuntu partition will simply remove ubuntu BUT YOU MUST REPLACE YOUR CURRENT MBR BEFORE DOING THIS, OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BOOT TO ANYTHING. You will only get an error message when you boot. Use the following for general directions

 HOWEVER BEFORE DOING THAT:
   1. following the instructions for other OS to restore/repair MBR(master boot record), without knowing the what other
OS is impossible to offer exact instructions.
   2. If XP and your computer has a floppy drive; goto bootdisk.com and download a windows 98 boot disk, prepare and
install per the instructions to create the win98 bootdisk, boot to it and at the command line type "fdisk /mbr", then
reboot(after removing the disk) and your machine should boot directly to your XP partition, is this is successfull
you can format the ubuntu partitions and this will eliminate the OS and you can reclaim hard drive space.
   3. If Vista and your computer can with a restore CD, boot to it and chose repair from "Computer will not boot" option.

The goal here is to overwrite your MBR(Master Boot Record) so that your machine boots directly to the other OS.
Sorry if this seems abit vague but you did not provide muh information to go on to begin with. Good Luck

For WINDOWS XP.

Follow This procedure.

1. Log on to Windows XP and right click on My Computer and click on Manage
2. Then on the left side of the Manage Window, select Disk Management.
3. Now just right click on the partition in which you installed Ubuntu and click on Delete. Now your ubuntu is uninstalled.
4. Now when you reboot you won't be able to go to Windows as you will get an Error for the grub.
5. Now just insert the Windows CD and change the primary boot settings to CD -Rom.Now you will notice that your pc boots with the CD.
6. Let all the application load. Then you will be asked what you want to do.Then hit the R button on the Keyboard. That will take you to a page similar to a Command Prompt.
7. There you will find a line like this::

Which windows do you want to choose?
1. C:/Windows

Then type 1 and press Enter.
YOU WILL BE ASKED FOR YOU ADMINISTRATOR'S PASSWORD.IF YOU DID GIVE AN ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD WHILE INSTALLING WINDOWS THEN TYPE IT OTHERWISE LEAVE IT BLANK AND HIT ENTER
8. Now Just type FIXMBR
(Note:Type exactly as I typed in the 8th step.)
9. Now your Ubuntu is successfully un-installed.Just remove the Windows CD and reboot.

This should fix your problem.

Good Luck.

Hello,

I also appreciate the above advice. But, I have one of these little netbooks with xp standard, I thought I'd try netbook remix and I want to remove it. I didn't get an xp boot disc but I have a USB DVD drive. Should I download and burn one of these win98 boot discs and use that as in step 5?
Also when I have finished I will install normal ubuntu 9. How do I download apps without breaking the damn thing???

Thanks

I know it's been a while since you posted this, and I hope you've already successfully completed the operation you set out to do, but just in case...:

If you're going to reinstall standard ubuntu 9.04 ayway, why not just install directly over the netbook remix version and cut out the middle-man? It should be fairly straightforward to do with the regular install CD.

Also, installing 'regula'r apps should never 'break' anything... the only exception to this might be installing software from random sources on the internet. Stick to the repositories (i.e. install from Add/Remove or synaptic) and you should be just fine.

feel free to email me if you've got any questions.
