Upgrade to tig-2.5.4

Asked by Matthieu TALBOT

Hello,

I wish that ubuntu apt install would have a more up to date tig version that includes this pull request :
* https://github.com/jonas/tig/pull/1098

Right now, apt installs tig version 2.5.1. Unfortunately, the pull request I need is only contained in the release 2.5.4 :
* https://github.com/jonas/tig/commit/8b1945d8fa8a318bab258e1a25153dd073e046a0
* https://github.com/jonas/tig/releases/tag/tig-2.5.4

Is it the correct place to ask ? Can I do anything to help this happen ? What are the rules and mechanism to upgrade a packet to a more up-to-date version ?
First message for me, sorry if my etiquette is wrong.

Best,
Matthieu

Manfred Hampl suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #3037: “no rolling release”.

So IIRC, I should file for a backport instead ? I am using hirsute, do you know where this happens ? I found https://bugs.launchpad.net/artful-backports/+filebug?field.title=tig&field.tags= but it's for artful.

A backport in Ubuntu is not possible, because the newer version is not available in any Ubuntu release yet.

In addition you have to be aware that Ubuntu copies packages form Debian, and also in Debian there is only version 2.5.1-1 of tig, see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/tig
There is already a bug report in Debian requesting an update - https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=990887

For Ubuntu you can only wait that the Debian bug is dealt with, or you build your own version from the newest source yourself.

I will build the version myself then. Thanks for taking the time to educate me, all the best,
