What is the output of the command
sudo lshw -C display

What happens when you remove the parameter nomodeset from the boot command?

Thanks. I forgot to remove nomodeset.

The issue was originally the upgrade left in xserver-xorg-video-intel. This caused the X Login to fail (after I logged in I got a blinking cursor only). To work around this issue I added nomodeset to grub, but after I removed xserver-xorg-video-intel I forgot to remove nomodeset.
