Ubuntu 20.04 maxima vtk

Asked by Edward Montague

 Using Ubuntu 20.04.
Installed, using synaptic, maxima, wxmaxima, xmaxima.
Attempted to use the maxima draw package, with renderer: vtk, returned error, vtk not found.

After a lot of searching, trial and error, I managed to correct this situation.

 What I did:
    1. install python 2
    2. use python 2 to install pip
   3. use python 2 version of pip, to install vtk; this was vtk version 8.x.x .
   4. Opened wxmaxima, from applications, as usual.
   5. Tried various examples for package draw, with draw_renderer: vtk .
   6. Now appears to function correctly.

Perhaps, you're able to provide a more detailed description of how to do this, or possibly just install vtk version 8.x.x,
as I've lost track of some of the steps involved.
