Ubuntu does not boot on kernel 5.14.4

Asked by Ian Leath

I have a Dell XPS 7590 running Ubuntu 21.04. Whenever I try to build 5.14.4 from kernel.org, it runs, complains about something related to v4l2loopback, and allows me to install without any other problem. However, this new kernel does not boot, instead hanging on Loading initial ramdisk even in verbose and recovery modes. What can I do?

Do other kernels boot OK and run your hardware and so on....?

Yes, other kernels (specifically the one Ubuntu comes with) work fine. However I see that the kernel Ubuntu comes with is heavily unoptimized and runs slower compared to another kernel I ran, 5.14.2 installed using mainline. That booted but prevented my laptop from suspending when the lid was closed (still an unsolved issue).

I suggest you report a bug. The mainline PPA guys need to hear about issues to resolve them

Where do I submit it then?

Run:

ubuntu-bug linux-image-xxxx-generic

Where xxxx is the version number

If the kernel from the Ubuntu mainline repository works, but only a self-built version (from kernel.org) doesn't, then it does not make sense to create a bug report in Ubuntu.
