What does the underline in translation strings mean? Ex: "_Print Screen"

Asked by JL

I would be delighted if someone possibly with knowledge of programing wold tell me what's the meaning of the underline "_" in translation strings mean?

Ex: "_Print Screen", "Open _window", "Quit pro_gram".

(Above examples is only illustrative.)

The answer wold help me to do better translations, since I do not have so much knowledge of programing.

Thanks a lot,

The underscore characters are used to indicate the letter for selecting an entry from the menu. When running the program they are not shown, but the character that follows is underlined. see e.g. the first image in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KeyboardShortcuts
