Hmm, no idea really.

You can switch between the text mode consoles and X windows (the graphical interface) using the key combination Ctrl-Alt-F<n>

Ctrl-Alt-F1 is text console 1
Ctrl-Alt-F2 is text console 2
...
Ctrl-Alt-F6 is text console 6
Ctrl-Alt-F7 is X windows
Ctrl-Alt-F8 shows console messages

But normally it always comes up in X windows and you don't even recongnize the other ones.

However, if X windows crashes it might be possible to check the logs for error messages in a text console. (I guess. I don't think it has ever been necessary for me.)

I'll ask this as I ask ALL new installs:

Did you MD5 check the ISO you downloaded? Did you also check the disk was ok once burned? Did you burn at the slowest speed possible?

Did you try to install Ubuntu inside Windows as though Ubuntu was just another program? Or did you use this much better way?

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

I would advise trying to install Ubntu like this as it's much the best way to set your system up :) We can sort out the other install after you've set up this way ;) You can tell if you have done it this way already as this way gives a bootup menu with lots of options for booting into Ubuntu and allsorts, the other way just has 2 lines, one for Ubuntu and the other for Windows. Please let us know :)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Well to answer about the MD5 and the ISO I'm not sure what is really. I got the install file I have my teacher and I have talked him and he said its a graphics cards prob, its missing the drivers. This is what he is saying. I would have installed it the better way but I don't have the CD.

Some driver problem sounds indeed more likely than a corrupted installation image (which you would have found checking the MD5 sums)

Can you log in from from the text console? Use Ctrl-Alt-F1 key combination to make it visible if necessary. After logging in type the following command:

less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

(note that X must be capital, everything else must not be. As opposed to Windows Linux is case sensitive)

If more than 1 screen of text is available use the space bar to scroll down.

Does it say anything about errors in this file? (Most likely towards the end of the file)

MD5 checking makes sure the ISO you downloaded is ok and did not get ruined in transmission. This CAN happen so MD5 exists to chck file integrity BEFORE burning the CD. A bad ISO *WILL* give issues.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Read that and check the ISO you downloaded. if the 2 codes do not matchyou need to redownload the file again and will explain why you are having issues.

Can you help with this problem?
