Installing Windows based games

Asked by samwty

Hi, I am an avid gamer, but my knowledge is almost all windows based. I have installed wine but I cannot seem to get any games to work with it ( e.g. Diablo). Also when I try to install a multi-disk game that is windows based I cannot eject the first disk to install the second without closing the installer.

Have you been over to http://www.winehq.org/ and checked out the compatability of your games there?

With regard to multi-disk games, there are a few things which can mean that you can't install disk two - for example, having the folder for your dvd/cd drive open - perhaps because you were looking for the location of the setup.exe for the game. If the drive directory/folder is open, you will get problems. Sometimes you can use the umount command from a terminal to unmount the drive and then eject it with either a button press or with the eject command.
You may well want to try the little tool on the wineHQ site called wine eject.
http://wiki.winehq.org/eject
which will eject the disks for you :)

For gaming in Ubuntu, these are the choices:

1. Dual boot so that you have a copy of Windows installed on a separate hard drive or create a new partition if you only have one hard drive
2. Check Cedega at http://www.cedega.com/
This is a commercial organisation and works on a subscription basis.
3. Check Wine HQ, as suggested by Mark above.
4. Check:

Please note, that the Windows installation can be done without giving Windows access to the internet and thereby making it safe from viruses and other malware.
