Network settings For OpenVPN don't take DNS

Asked by Christopher Keddy

For Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop edition. When creating a openvpn connection using the Network settings under IPv4 tab if you select
[x]Use this connection only for resources on its network

The DNS setting above does not get applied. When I disable this all traffic goes through and the DNS works. I need to use the DNS server on the other end of the tunnel because it has entries to resolve internal names.

I'm thinking this might be a bug with the implementation

To be clear the DNS server is inside the networks I specify. I also can do a 'nslookup some.example.com 192.168.0.1' and get the custom record I made for that domain. It just no longer default to using the DNS provided. And My LAN network on the client is not part of the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet

To double check that this issue is not a configuration issue. I have tested the same .ovpn file on other OS. Mac and Windows handle the file correctly.

I have submitted a bug report.

On your bug report you might try using the terminal: ubuntu-bug openvpn to start apport to collect data to go with the report.
