Dell 1320c printer (network) and Brother MFC-8700 printer (USB) will not print from Ubuntu v8.1.

Asked by cruzer

I have a Dell 1320c printer that is installed and configured as a network printer with a dedicated IP address. The printer works with other Mac OSX, Windows XP and Windows Vista through wired and wireless connections. Since I have received no working remedy to this issue, I decided to USB connect a Brother MFC-8700 as the printer with driver was included and installed and seemed to be recognised. However, when sending a print job, the printer indicates "recieving data" but will never print.

I need specific detailed step-by-step instruction with getting these printers and printers in general with Ubuntu. Everything else has been a great experience but it's sad that getting a printer to work is such a pain.

See http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Dell-1320c_color_laser.

The Brother MFC-8700 is not listed on openprinting.org, so no idea if it is supported on linux.
