Ubuntu 20.04 No Network Devices Found

Asked by tomdean

On an Intel NUC, when using apt install, I saw a message about autoremove. Some things I do not need. But most likely some things I need.
> sudo apt autoremove
...

After some time, the network went away. No Wifi. No Wired connection.

I looked in /var/log/apt/history.log. Lots of things removed.

I swapped the disk to a two-week-old disk, everything worked. So something is missing. A driver or something that detects network devices.

The device has no network connection. I could do a full reinstall, lose some work. I have a two-day-old backup.

Be nice to know what piece(s) of software did this.

A lot of networking stuff is missing. /etc/network/interfaces* /sbin/if*, and many more.

Maybe I got a booger?

I plan to do a fresh install and restore some home/me from backup.

On my Ubuntu 20.04 system I do not have the files /etc/network/interfaces* and /sbin/if* either and network is definitely working.

If you execute the command
sudo lshw -C network
does it say UNCLAIMED, or do you have an entry for "driver=" in the configuration block?

The problem no longer exists. I reinstalled from *.iso.
