My desktop background is overlayed by my home directory

Asked by tomdean

My desktop background is displayed, but, it is overlayed by a full screen "files" display of my home directory.

I attempted to change to twm.

sudo apt install twm
sudo systemctl set-default multi-user.target
edit /etc/X11/default-display-manager
  change to /usr/bin/twm
copy original .xinitrc to home directory
reboot - should boot to multi-user mode with console login
startx - should get back to twm

startx failed.

> grep EE .local/share/xorgXorg.0.log
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
[ 11.773] (EE) open /dev/fb0: Permission denied
[ 12.240] (II) Initializing extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER

I reversed the above changes, except I did not remove twm.

Any ideas?

I rebooted. At the login screen, I can select twm. Same error, access
to /dev/fb0.
Selecting ubuntu I have the "files" overlay on the desktop. I can
double-click on a folder and it opens.

I can change permissions on /dev/fb0, but, that is not a proper fix.

I added myself to the video group.

The /dev/fb0 error does not happen. However, when I select twm at
login, the screen blinks and the login prompt reappears.

lastlog shows that I do not get to login before things break.

Solved it - sort of.

I noticed snap was controlling the desktop.

Removed snapd.
Installed gnome-session
Installed vanilla-gnome-desktop vanilla-gnome-default-settings

Now, the desktop is clear.

I noticed before I removed snapd, the system was very sluggish, apps
taking several seconds to open and mouse movements were lagging. Now,
it is crisp.

I sort of like the vanilla gnome looks.

Twm has a font bug, so I will stay with gnome, for now.
