Can't launch Google Earth after installation

Asked by jalcradus

I installed Google Earth using Synaptic. It now shows Google Earth as being installed but I can't find an icon in the applications menu or on the desktop to click on to launch it. Have I missed a step?

Under my Ubuntu 8.10 the SynapticManager placed "Google Earth" in Applications-->Internet. Did you look there?

Try working through this guide and see if that sorts out all those problems

Synaptic reports that Google Earth is installed, I just don't have an icon anywhere in the apps menu or the desktop to click on to launch it.

Try right click on the "Applications" menu and edit the menu. Hopefully there will just be a tick box somewhere for google-earth.

It might also be worth trying to get it running by starting to type it into the command-line and part-way through typing use tab complete. Get to a command-line by clicking on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

type

goog (and then press tab, it should complete the command for you ;) if not try pressing tab twice like a double click, that should give options based on what you have typed so far ;) )

Thanks for the suggestions but I don't see it in the edit menu box and the Terminal method only resulted in a "beep".

If you installed the 5.0 version, why won't you uninstall it and try with the previous 4.3, again with Synaptic? The 5.0 is a beta-version...

The beep suggests that google anything isn't installed on your machine properly somehow. I would recommend following Vihar's advice. I didn't know google-earth had a beta out but i really must try out google-earth on this machine soon. It soud interesting :)

Good luck and regards from

Took your advice and went to previous version. Works now. Thanks to both of you for your help.

Please, if you can, try re-opening the question and click on the button at the bottom of Vihar's answer. That gives him "Karma Points" which gives him credit for a good answer there. This also helps people searching through the "Solved Answers" to try to solve the same problem in the future.

Good luck with this, regards from
Tom :)

Hi James :)

Please post this as a new question because older questions (especially ones marked "Solved") are seldom looked through by people looking to help solve problems.

Please use this link
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

Also note that that crash log is stored on your own machine and is not available to us over the internet. As it is a crash report it might be better to post a bug-report about this rather than ask a question. Questions do need to be kept as brief as possible but a brief description would help a lot.

Usually to post a bug-report from any application click (on the menu's at the top)

Help - Report a problem/bug

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
