GDM3 and Lightdm fail at startup

Asked by besto

I'm runnung Ubuntu 20.06 on a dell latitude 5401. Yesterday I did a reboot after some upgrade have been installed. Again, as before, gdm3 and lightdm both fail to load and the boot process hangs, if I use the kernel 5.4.0-72-generic. This happened before. The workaround was to boot from failsafe do

systemctl start gdm3.service
dpkg-reconfigure gdm3

and resume. But, then the graphics driver is not working properly.
I solved it now, by falling back to kernel 5.4.0-71-generic. This was a kernel, where everything worked. This seems to be something within the kernel versions ...

Well, the problem is still there. Anybody with an idea? it seems to be
related to a kernel issue ...

Due to this issue, I refrain from restarting the computer a lot. Now, I had to. So I can report: The issue exists in
Linux 5.4.0-74-generic #82-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

but not in
Linux 5.4.0-73-generic #82-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Or in 5.4.0-71-generic ... still no clue of how to avoid this.
