Trying to overwrite XP. XP has virus and I can't boot xp to access disk that way. Though directions on disk say that it should boot from disk.

Need more information please :).

Do you get a grub menu at all? Or any message whatsoever involving GRUB?

Because if you do - thats one problem and one solution,
and if you don't - thats another problem and a different solution.

Thanks =],
Ben

Setup a dual-boot
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

install ClamAv into Ubuntu using Synaptic Package Manager
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

Use Clamscan to scan and remove infected files from Xp. Then trying rebooting into Xp. If it doesn't bootup then back into Ubuntu and use firefox web-browser to search for and replace any files that Xp is missing! This usually repairs but you might need a specialist disto like "Trinity Rescue Kit"
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=trinity
To complete the repairs to Xp

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
